Sarasota, Fort Myers, Naples, and fish species of SW Florida

Here at Dockoar Fishing Charters we provide many different types of SW Florida fishing charters. We fish inshore, offshore, on the wrecks and reefs, and sometimes we are even trolling. The type of fishing or the species we are targeting can depend on any number of different things. Obviously the type of species that is running or in season is a big determining factor. And even though we fish year round the season itself still is a big determining factor in the type of fish we target.

Fishing in Sarasota or fishing anywhere along the SW Florida coast you will find numerous underwater bottom structures like wrecks or reefs and they are usually full of fish. Fish seek out these wrecks, reefs or bottom structures for cover from larger predators and to prey on the smaller fish themselves. Certain species are more common than others when it comes to wreck fishing. Grouper and snapper are usually a good bet on any given Florida wreck. On these Sarasota wrecks the larger fish that are attracted to the wrecks by the various baitfish species include the many different species of grouper, amberjack, cobia, and other "bottom fish" that you may see in the list below.

Just like there are a variety of sportfish species available on a Fort Myers or Sarasota wreck fishing trip there is likewise quite a few different fishing techniques your charterboat Captain will employ to ensure you catch fish. Some of the different wreck and bottom fishing tactics include:

  • Drifting along structures when the tide and wind cooperate.
  • Anchoring up to a wreck.
  • Using lures and artificial baits.
  • Fishing with live bait, a favorite among experienced anglers.
  • Chumming
  • And depending on water conditions your Captain will use a complete range of tactics from the type of leaders to the type of hooks.
